School-To-Work Internships Give Students Work Place Experience
|
Senior students attending the Adams County/Ohio Valley School District's high schools can now experience the day to day up's and down's of a career they would like to pursue after graduation. As a result of an initiative sponsored by the Adams County School-To-Work Action Partnership, seniors opting to participate are placed in their chosen field for half the school day for a period of twelve weeks. Instead of earning wages, the student earns a unit of credit that counts toward their graduation requirements.
The purpose of the program is to provide an experience for students that will enhance the process of selecting a career that meets their needs and expectations. According to Gene Toole, STW Coordinator for the Action Partnership, " the program is working in two different ways; in many situations, students are leaving the internship with their career choice confirmed, whereas, in other situations, students find that what they thought they wanted to do after graduation was not what they expected and decided that they needed to modify their career choice". The desired result of the program is to reduce the number of poor career choices and in doing so eliminate wasted time in inappropriate post-secondary classes or wasting time pursuing a job after graduation in which students would not be happy. Partnering with representatives of local business and industry, the variety of opportunities available to students continues to expand. To date, approximately seventy-five students have been placed in hospitals, law firms, schools, insurance agencies, accounting firms, doctor's offices, engineering firms, radio stations, and newspapers to mention a few. According to Toole, "we are striving to make this a win-win situation. Whereas the businesses do not pay wages to the student, they do have to expend time and resources in the training and mentoring of the students". In return the business partner does receive the benefit of the work that students can perform while on the job site.
